Something does not quite add up with this story out of Wisconsin:
Denise Novotny, a woman from Missouri who is accused of paying a Kewaskum couple nearly $6000 for their baby, made her initial appearance in Washington County Court Tuesday.
According to prosecutors, Angela Schmidt gave birth to a baby girl at a Hartford hospital in 2004. She had signed a surrogacy agreement with Novotny. Novotny took the baby from the hospital parking lot.
Schmidt and her husband later claimed they were tricked by the false agreement. Novotny never filed for adoption.
In 2009, police tracked Novotny down in Missouri. She is now charged with Child Abduction and Unauthorized Adoption. Those charges could put her behind bars for 21 years.
Novotny’s lawyer, Julius Kim, says she doesn’t believe she did anything wrong.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
