They say stupidity knows no bounds and the political right has to be an early front-runner for a 2013 Darwin Award. Conservative organizations are leading the charge against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) on the novel theory that the act is unfair to men. In a recent blog post, Heritage Action for America writes that, “[u]nder VAWA, men effectively lose their constitutional rights to due process, presumption of innocence, equal treatment under the law, the right to a fair trial and to confront one’s accusers, the right to bear arms, and all custody/visitation rights. It is unprecedented, unnecessary and dangerous.” Freedomworks,
one of largest grassroots teaparty organizations wholly owned astroturf subsidiary funded by the Koch Brothers allegedly representing real teabagging Americans, likewise posits that VAWA is not only expensive but that “[s]upporters of the VAWA portray women as helpless victims – this is the kind of attitude that is setting women back.”
The National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women posted a lengthy rebuttal to oppenents of VAWA, which can be found here.
